I serve the light within me
a quiet flame that does not shout
yet outlives every storm.
I serve peace instead of anger
though anger rises sharp and fast
I let it pass through open hands
refusing it a home.
I serve love instead of ego
though ego begs to be seen
to be right, to be praised
I choose instead to be whole.
Each moment, I kneel again
not in weakness
but in willing devotion
to the highest part of myself.
For what I serve, I become.
And so, I become light.
I become peace.
I become love.

- Comment from author about the poem: I wrote "INNER SERVITUDE" as a reminder to myself of the kind of person I want to be, even when life gives me reasons to be otherwise. I want to be someone who chooses love, even when it is difficult. Someone who can feel anger without allowing it to consume her, who can let go of the need to prove herself, and who doesn't have to respond to everything that hurts her. This poem is a quiet commitment to that process. That I must be intentional about what I nurture within myself. And if there is anything I want to dedicate my life to, it is becoming a person whose presence carries a little more love, a little more peace, and a little more light.
