The universe has a strange habit.
It destroys everything
without remembering what it destroys.
The stars collapse
without mourning their light.
The oceans swallow cities
without learning their names.
And entire civilizations disappear
without leaving behind
a single witness who understands
what has been lost.
Everything that ever mattered
to someone
eventually becomes nothing
to everything else.
Except, perhaps,
for one impossible thing.
You.
You remember the afternoon
someone held your hand
when you were afraid.
You remember the face
of someone who no longer remembers yours.
You remember a room
that no longer exists,
a voice that no longer answers,
a version of yourself
who believed the world
would turn out differently.
The universe has forgotten them all.
But you haven't.
And sometimes,
I wonder if memory is not
the mind preserving the past,
but the past
refusing to disappear completely.
Because somewhere inside you,
a moment that ended years ago
is still happening.
Someone is still laughing.
Someone is still saying goodbye.
Someone is still standing
in a doorway,
waiting for you to say
what you couldn't say then.
And you are the only place
where any of it still exists.
Think about that.
You are carrying entire worlds
that no longer have a home
outside your mind.
You are the final witness
to conversations
the universe never recorded.
And when you forget something,
truly forget it,
perhaps that is the closest thing
a moment ever experiences
to dying a second time.
But there is something worse
than being forgotten.
Something I understood
only when I began writing this.
If every memory needs someone
to remember it,
then what happens to the moments
you have forgotten already?
The childhood afternoons
you cannot recall.
The strangers who smiled at you
on days you no longer remember.
The little kindnesses
you received before you knew
they would matter.
Did they become nothing?
Or are they still somewhere
inside the person you are,
quietly shaping the way you love,
the things you fear,
the reasons you stop
to help someone
you have never met?
Perhaps the past does not survive
because we remember it.
Perhaps it survives
because it changes what comes next.
A kindness travels
from one person to another
until nobody remembers
where it began.
A sentence spoken years ago
becomes the reason
someone refuses to give up today.
A person disappears,
but something they taught you
continues making decisions
long after they are gone.
And maybe this is how
anything truly escapes death.
Not by remaining unchanged,
not by being remembered forever,
but by becoming part
of something that continues.
So perhaps we have misunderstood
what it means to leave this world.
Perhaps the question is not
whether anyone will remember us.
Perhaps the question is:
When the last person
who remembers your face
is gone,
will something you gave the world
still be moving through it,
changing a life
you will never see,
in a way
you will never know?
And if the answer is yes,
then somewhere in the future,
long after your name
has become unfamiliar,
a small piece of your existence
will still be happening.
And the universe,
which never remembered you,
will be carrying you forward
without even knowing it.
