Swimming the A1 Motorway

Kevin Hulme

Its a Mighty Task and the Plannings Begun,

And it's to Swim the vast distance of the Great A1.

From London to Edinburgh some 400 Miles,

For a Strenuous Stretch of our Beloved British Isles.

All forms of Style, and in just one day,

To float the Nation's  Motorway.

And Snorkel and Flippers will help me by,

When along the Tar with Grease I fly,

And since all Strength I will Command,

So a Lifeguard throughout will be on hand.

'But there is no Water upon the Road',

I hear you Scoff in Cynical mode.

Well there's the Challenge to which I find:

To Swim on land, the impossible kind.

Now I dive in Quickly at Aldersgate;

With a Freestyle-Stroke at a steady rate,

And with distance covered over difficult Earth,

A Backstroke-Style until Colsterworth,

And forever North my object true,

Until Grantham Town comes into View.

How the Crowd will Cheer,  their encouragement Heard,

And the Scribes at Guinness will eat their Words:

For they laughed at the Egyptians saying the World was Flat;

And Old Abe Lincoln for Wearing a Tall Hat.

So with that in Mind I'll up the fight,

As Darlington Town loomes into sight,

Then to the end a change of style;

To a Butterfly-Stroke up the great Royal Mile.

And all achieved in Record Time;

As I Swim on past the finish line.

But this I feel is not the End,

As another Feat I will contend,

For a different Achievement is now in Stage;

A Glorious Chapter in my Records Page:

For being a Naturist with Glowing Pride

Where all are One with Naught to hide;

My Friends and I have another Goal-

A Nudest Expedition to the Earth's South Pole.
