Hour's Howl

Janice3

Halloween is my favorite holiday because it’s a month long distraction

You can get real spooky and make it your passion

All your insecurities and shortcomings and your turmoils crashing

Become November First’s worries until then Im slashing

I’m spooking Im tricking

Myself into thinking there’s nothing to do

let the edibles kick in

Feel all that is real but I’m really just tripping

At this costume party I hope that I fit in

They’re out smashing pumpkins they’re dressed like two kittens

I stare at the moon and wish the man good riddance

    Seasonal and most fitting it shows good rhyme and is well done

    There’s a funny, slightly ragged melancholy underneath the Halloween revelry here, with costumes, edibles, and spooky distractions becoming ways to postpone the insecurities and troubles that will still be waiting when November arrives. “Become November First’s worries until then Im slashing” is the keeper for me, because it captures the poem’s central bargain with such dark humor: for one glorious month, you can dress your troubles up as monsters and pretend you’ve conquered them, even when you know they’ll be waiting when the masks come off.
