Come back as a ladybird

Micah Finchley

Come back as a ladybird:

I’ve always felt like the odd one out,

but I’m sure most youngest children do.

It might be that I’m weird, or it might be my love for bugs.

Either way, I feel much more like myself – alone.

I have an older sister, she’s travelling the world.

But with her, is the closest I’ve ever felt to  “normal”.

I wished for her back

and when I looked up there sat a ladybird.

Once I’d saved her from the spider -

she wouldn’t leave my side.

For a moment,

I felt sort of… seen.

I took her as a sign.

She meant a blessing,

and protection.

And one day,

once I depart from this earth.

I want to come back as a ladybird,

so then I can protect others like me.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I missed my sister today, she’s off travelling with her boyfriend. I was thinking of her when I saw this beauty of a ladybird, she had flown off and nearly been eaten by a spider when I saved her despite my injured foot and having to jump to help her. When i took her outside she wouldn’t leave me. It was sort of like we needed each other, I love bugs. She loved me. I take her as a sign, ladybirds represent blessing and protection, transformation and good luck. And I’ve done a lot of transforming this year. I just hope she doesn’t think I left her outside to kill her.

Micah, this is lovely! I've always felt a special connection with animals myself, and I smiled at your little rescue story. There's so much kindness here. Loved it, my friend! 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛
