Between the Frames

Matthew R. Callies

A pencil draws a line, and then

the line becomes a bird, a friend,

a door, a dragon, or a star—

and suddenly we're somewhere far

from where the artist first began.

A little movement, frame by frame,

can give a drawing life and name;

a painted figure learns to run,

a paper moon becomes the sun,

and still the magic starts with pen.

Clay figures dance beneath the light,

puppets awaken in the night,

while pixels build a world from air

and make impossible things seem there.

The screen goes dark. We dream again.

From ink and paint to moving light,

from hand-drawn worlds to digital flight,

animation reminds us all

that even when the pictures stall,

imagination makes them live.

A pencil draws a line, and then—

the line becomes a world again.
