Two Swans

cully45

A Swan swims across the Lake at dawn

Making an early morning yawn

With a little fluffy brood in tow

Five, six, seven or so

Mother follows at the rear

Causing me a little tear

To see her with her family fair

Never noticing that we are there

Her partner, a big strong male

Long sleek neck and flapping tail

Wanders aimlessly around and around

Making very little sound

Their chicks just try to follow Dad

Who by now is getting a bit mad

His long neck stretches out our way

As if to say to us just go away

His large white Wings are now open spread

The flapping sound it makes would wake the dead

When he’s annoyed you just get out

Because his Wings will give you such a clout

His partner she has now arrived

Wondering if her young have survived

She rounds them up and off she sets

And makes sure that’s as close as anyone gets

They wander off back down the Lake

A lovely sight for goodness sake

Majestically they all swim away

Hopefully to be seen another day

The young just little brown balls of fluff

No white feathers yet, they look quite rough

Ugly Ducklings true to the story

Sometime later they will be in their glory

With long white Necks and feathers so bright

They will easily be seen even at night

Gracefully they all move away at will

The water beneath them looking quite still

A happy family with Mum and Dad

They have gone away that makes us sad

We will be back tomorrow and hopefully

That they are still here and ok for us to see
