I can’t quiet my head, aim or get my priorities straight
And I see the shadows that I cast, they make failure feel like fate
I go to bed on time, but my thoughts burn holes in my eyes, I’m still up late
Everything’s woven together, I focus on nothing and everything, I can’t separate
Two steps forward, I’m wrestling against the step back
But every ache in my chest makes me paranoid of another heart attack
It’s gray, it’s really gray, why does it look black?
I shatter in my mind, will and heart at the slightest crack
Please don’t let me fall anymore
I already overcame this, I could’ve swore
But I feel the tension rising, don’t send me back to war
I’ve come too far, it’s been too long, my peace, I just want to restore
Please just help me see through my own lie
It hasn’t rained in years, fix my head on the blue sky
I knew I could yesterday, remind me now that I can fly
Hell is the lost story of someone else who wore my skin, I don’t need to die
But I hear whispers from the past spoken by someone who was insane
And I’m terrified by the sight of his self indulgence in his own pain
And I don’t understand, because I thought this monster had been slain
But he’s making me afraid that my discovery of greener pastures was in vain
Hit the brakes, breathe the cool, crisp air, feel the sun, go on a stroll
Somehow, somewhere, I’ll find something else to calm the waves in my soul
Nothing then ever did, it’s God here and now made me whole
I escaped and I’m never going back to that black hole

- Comment from author about the poem: I'm okay and I would never go back. But, it's been a little tough recently. I'm a bit overwhelmed, my brain's going too fast, almost makes old habits of self destruction sound nice. Haven't felt this level of turmoil or temptation in awhile, but I-WILL-NOT.
