There is a Rain That Falls

Greg Davidson

Gently is a rain that falls,
Gentle as a tear to cheek.
Softly on a bud or leaf,
So softly, to the ground.
There is a rain that falls.

Gently is a rain that falls,
Falling as do tears on cheek.
Falling with both joy and grief,
Softly, without a sound.
There is a rain that falls.

Cold there is a rain that falls,
Cold it falls, an icy dart,
Cold and sharp against the pane,
As driven by a gale.
There is a rain that falls.

Cold there is a rain that falls,
Cold it falls upon a heart
Cold and sharp, a lonely pain,
As pierced through by a nail.
There is a rain that falls.

Hard there is a rain that falls,
Hard it falls ‘gainst the mountain side,
It gathers in the creeks and gullies,
To come against both wall and tower.
There is a rain that falls.

Hard there is a rain that falls,
Hard it falls, then grows to a tide,
To gather in the streets and alleys,
To come against the halls of power.
There is a rain that falls.
