That Laughter Echoed No Sound

mustofa munir

Though your songs sometimes dejected me but
In those songs an untamed sway of love I felt,
Many times lonely I became,
Many times you filled that space!
In this empty home you ran with your
Swinging braids, rhythm was there!
Now that door, that window, that
Shadow of the corridor jingle not in delight!
No one sings a song there. Like a secluded island
I’m abandoned—like a lone boat I drift along
Without a sail, like an illusory call of night I hear
Some whisperings—not any song ever!
Then why should I listen to song? You’re
No more in the song, no melody is there and
Prevails only a resonance of lifeless sound!
Orpheus! Which melody you played in your lyre?
I missed it! After many morbid days under
A sky of many pallid stars I laughed aloud!
And that laughter echoed no sound!

  • Comment from author about the poem: Lovers' life do not end in a happy ending. They might not find each other in the life they wanted to build. They live only with the memories.. with the pain of estrangement.
