And If My Soul Is Crying

Carl Halling

It's happening again,

Such unbearable pain,

And if my soul is crying

As my heart is breaking, then that's fine…

I've let so many people down,

Lost so many beautiful opportunities

I feel so failed and forlorn,

But is that really such a tragedy?

Perhaps, rather,

It’s a positive thing,

Shouldn't a true artist be suffering?

At least I'm feeling something…

It's happening again,

Such unbearable pain,

And if my soul is crying

As my heart is breaking, then that's fine…

  • Comment from author about the poem: For some time now I've been prone to spells of abyssal sorrow that come, remain for a week or less, and then pass; and I wrote "And If My Soul Is Crying" directly from the heart during one such recent spell, although I no longer identify with it to any degree, and can't see myself doing so for some time as I finish writing this passage on 28 November 2015.
