The Light In August

Seeker

Lighting all the welkin with beams of gold
Flooding our eyes with a brilliant tone
Daydreams take on intensities ten fold
August, summer’s king blinds us from his throne

Poets and fools share flowing light in their blood
The gods gave them special vision at day
Gurus with orbs to see living light’s flood
Mortals without these do not see this way

Shiny objects, bright colors hold the herd's power
Are the dreamers gone from our cloyed world
Where are the few who see the sun tower
Light and August knitted as one and purled

You slaves of the muse, why waste your strange sight
Too long have you remained dumb in the light

  • Comment from author about the poem: Though I owe much to William Faulkner and his genius for the title of this poem, I owe him a great deal more for the inspiration his novel of similar title gave me. His description of the nature of August light in that novel made me realize there is a special light that can be experienced in the month of August only. When I see this light I am overwhelmed with introspection.
