Goodnight Said The Child.

W. G. Simms

Goodnight said The Child,
as you sent it to bed,
little you knew,
of the thoughts in its head.

Goodnight said The Child,
as it climbed up the stairs,
the last thing you touched
was its head full of hairs.

Goodnight said The Child,
as it closed the door,
and that was the last
of The Child you saw.

Goodnight said The Child,
as it looked at its arm,
the freshly made cuts
screamed with urgent alarm.

Goodnight said The Child,
as it shed one last tear,
and took one deep breath,
to combat the fear.

Goodnight said The Child,
as it swallowed the pill,
and lay silently patient,
until it was still.

Goodnight said The Child,
as it felt the earth slow,
and with one more “Goodnight”
The Child had let go.

Nothing said the child,
next morning at dawn,
and you feel a sharp pain,
like being stabbed with a thorn.

Nothing said the child
as you open the door,
and there they lie,
peaceful and small.

Nothing said the child,
as something dies in your eyes,
and Mother is rocking them,
in her arms as she cries.

Goodnight said The Mother,
as you both now mourn,
And remember the day
The Child was born.

Goodnight said The Father,
as you lower the box,
Constantly haunted,
by the ticking of clocks.

Goodnight said the child,
Like they once did before,
Goodnight said the child,
Said the child no more.

  • Comment from author about the poem: How do we deal with life? And thus, how do we deal with death? Are we truly a person until we are dead and they talk of us with great remorse for lost potential. Should we then live life waiting to be remembered or live for the seconds remaining?

My heart just broke. This is absolutely painful - sadly, too many struggle and give up in silence. You poem give them a voice. Thanks for sharing.
