THE IRONY OF THE BATON ROUGE SHOOTINGS

DubbleDhee

Several cops were shot & killed in an ambush in Baton Rouge
We live in a gun loving culture, violence is what we choose

Hard to call this a surprise after what happened a week ago
Mass violence has become the norm, we just go with the flow

We racialize murder. Only care if it's someone who looks like us
Circle the wagons and protect our own. All other go under the bus

The latest suspect was walking, armed with a large assault rifle
NRA defended his right to do so, all other opinions are stifled

One suspect is already dead, and two others may be at large
A new tragedy every week, seems like hate has taken charge

Police are searching for a gunman wearing army fatigues
The Feds have joined in the search. This case is in a new league

Some are quick to blame the rise of groups like Black Lives Matter
Racial tension didn't start yesterday. That kind of talk shouldn't be flattered

The city is already tense in the wake of a police shooting of a Black man
A former top cop went on TV spewing hate, that is not the right plan

Law enforcement describe the situation in Baton Rouge as a powder keg
Shooting of Alton Sterling triggered this. At this rate many more may be dead

Police officials call for protestors to publicly denounce the vicious killers
But the police never denounce rogue cops, which I find to be a real chiller

  • Comment from author about the poem: A number of cops were shot & killed in Baton Rouge Louisiana. Presumably in retaliation for the killing of Alton Sterling. And only a few days after cops were killed in Dallas, Texas.
