The Drinking Cycle

Michael Champion

Every few days alcohol calls to me

You know you want me

And if you come to the pub you’ll find friends

and I'll do you no harm."

"Ok", I say "I’ll just have three

I’ll then walk home quite soberly."

I think drinking for adults is like

Playing on swings:

It gives you a buzz and

three pints turn to four, five and then six

Then I feel hungry…

The next day I can’t quite remember the end

Of the night:  It’s a blur:

What did I say?

What did I do?

How did I get home?

And then I think:

"This time I’m giving up alcohol for good"

But then

Every few days alcohol calls to me

"You know you want me..."
