To My Sinister Brain

Augustus

My dear sinister brain,

Please do not fret.

Cooperate and let

Ideas that seem

Concrete and lean

Undo your power supreme.

Put aside your fears,

Formulas, logic, and ideas.

Rest, while I image the best

of spacial relationships

to timeless metaphor.

Believe me. Better that

Durer, Matisse, Bavetta

Know what they see willing

Adroit, gauche harmony.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem was written to an art teacher at one of the community colleges in California in the 80's. Her last name was "Bavetta". Linking her to Durer and Matisse in the same line is likely what won me an A in the course. I believe this is called "kiss ass." At the same time I was reading "Drawing on the Right Side Of The Brain" by Betty Edwards, first published in 1979 and still being reprinted. Artists call upon (draw using) the right side of the brain, suspending judgment and reason from the left side, which is too scientific and critical for true art to emerge. I've had artists tell me that they almost feel a "click" when they enter the zone and do their best work. They will work for hours in this state unaware of time, hunger, and their spouses complaints . Of course, "Adroit and gauche" are the French equivalent of right and left.
