The Disguise

this_girl

“Are you okay?”

“Hey, you can trust me.”

“Open up to me, I’m always here for you.”

“Are you feeling alright?"

LOST

SCARED

ANXIOUS

NERVOUS

DUMB

I smile and say, "I’m fine thanks for asking.”

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“You’ve been distant lately.”

CRYING

SCREAMING

NOT GOOD ENOUGH

STUPID

WASTE

I smile and say, “No really I’m okay, don’t worry about me.”

Heartbreak does things to you.

It puts this mask over your face.

It puts this cloud over your eyes.

It disguises, so no one knows what's really wrong. Sometimes you even fall for the illusion.

You act okay, you seem okay, you feel okay. But when you’re alone; Oh when you’re alone.

That’s when the clouds fade and the mask slips off. Memories fill your mind and you’re no longer shielded. You’re out in the open to your impaling thoughts.

They eat at you. The idea of him being gone. You feel incomplete, lost even. You tell yourself that you’re okay, that you’ll be fine but you know you’re lying. You’re telling yourself the same thing you tell the ones who ask about your well-being.

They ask again, “Are you sure you’re okay?”

I smile again and reply, “Yes, I’m fine."
