This is A quiet Solitary War
This is a lonely battle with no survivors
Against an enemy in me I cannot see,
Ravaging silently, relentlessly,
My agony whispers for a soul's release.
There are no cannon here,
Nor crackle of automatic fire,
No shrapnel does a limb shear
After tripping on a wire.
Planes do not roar, then soar.
This is a quiet solitary war.
There are no bugles, no reveille,
Just needle a dull "thunk" of a biopsy,
The "thump, thump, thump" of an MRI,
And the funk knowing too soon I may die.
Noiselessly tears pour.
This is a quiet solitary war.
My foxhole an infusion chair,
The supply line an IV.
My adversary too lies here,
We've become buddies him and me.
I'm but a shadow of that year ago photo.
He's castrate resistant, a mighty foe,
And endures to grow.
Together we go.
As the glass scythes away at our time
Courage is called to the fore.
Wait, wait, and wait some more.
It's no longer a solitary war.

- Comment from author about the poem: This has been one of the ways of dealing with fourth stage prostate cancer and it's ensuing depression. It is a particularly aggressive type that has not responded to conventional treatment. Cancer is a disease of "waiting". One waits for appointments, tests, for insurance approval, and for medications to hopefully take effect. Thanks for reading, and I encourage all men over 40 to get regular exams and PSA tests.

Wow, very powerful Augustus. The raw emotions you were able convey were touching, sincere and brought me into your world. I hope you have an army of support around you and you continue to write such beautiful poetry.
Just10: what a lovely response. I am touched. For a few days this poem only had a reader or two with not much comment. I was a little sad. You and Alita have both put a smile on my face.
Great poem that describes your emotions and battle beautifully. I'm sorry for what you are going through. Thoughts and prayers your way!
