Ky

Perhaps it was the air that night.

Perhaps it wasn’t love-

no, it wasn’t some organic, cataclysmic force

that drew us together.

Perhaps it was the air that night.

Maybe it was the fireflies

that swarmed our thoughts and hearts and the still summer air.

Maybe they hummed and whispered

sweet-nothings in our ear.

Maybe it was the fireflies.

I didn’t want to find you,

I didn’t want to love you,

and as the world around us kept turning

and we survived mindlessly in different cities, I realized

I didn’t want to lose you.

Perhaps it was the air that night.

It could have been the music, or the sweet scent of daisies-

it could have been your lips curved up at the sides just slightly,

a stencil of a smile;

one cheesy joke turning it into a catastrophic grin.

You destroyed my world as I knew it.

Or maybe,

maybe it was the fireflies.
