The Dancing Plague

ameliewho

A waltzing woman was just enough to get the groove into town
Villagers joined in prancing around until they all fell down

Frolicking Frau of Strasbourg France was the queen of the dancing trend
A bizarre exhibit of bouncing Frenchmen danced until the end

A plague of footwork, a cavorting craze, a dance until the death
400 folk jumped and jived until they took their one last breath

Was it witchcraft? Was it a fever? Or maybe a punishment from god?
The only thing we can say for sure is that the dancing plague was odd

  • Comment from author about the poem: Inspired by 'The Dancing Plague' which took place in France in the year 1518. It's famous because for no apparent or obvious reason, over 400 people dances themselves to death. The dancers died of heart attacks, stokes and pure exhaustion. It's said the woman who started it, Frau Troffea, danced for 6 days on stop before dying, it's said she should of died after 3 days from dehydration. Legend said that she was already dead, but still dancing. Read about it in the links below- http://m.digitaljournal.com/article/258521 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_Plague_of_1518
