A Chemical Reaction

Izzi Lynn

A cheshire cat's smile
Cry baby tears turned into laughter
Madness wasn't fun till the cheshire cat and the cry baby met
Drunk on insanity, high as a kite they fled to wonderland

Is insanity embedded in your DNA?
We were the paradox of the century
The fox who couldn't be caught
And the dog who always got his prey

Cry Baby stopped trying to fly
when she fell
Cheshire Cat taught her to trust again
Cheshire cat taught her to fly again.

Can the bars of a birdcage trap a butterfly?
We had always been a complicated mix of opposites
I was the night, but he always called me Sunshine
and he was the day, but we always talked at night.

Cheshire Cat met Cry Baby
and his smile was infectious
She was only a babe
and it was easy to get sick.

Does tragedy make you stronger or simply stranger?
We were never a pure mix of elements
I was potassium, he was H20
We were primed to explode

Cry Baby was just the right ratio of human and machine at first
and then she wasn't human enough, she was too machine
Cheshire Cat took her and made her
more human than she'd ever been

Is there a way to turn stars into constellations?
We were two puzzle pieces with edges that fit
I was a wild card
and he was the King of Hearts

Cry Baby rode around the carousel
Cheshire Cat beside her
Cheshire Cat took her to the ferris wheel
and together they went 'round and 'round

What's the difference between living and existing?
We were the perfect storm
I was the blinding lightning, constantly moving across the sky
and he was the howling wind, whipping us into a frenzy

For the first time in forever
Cry baby felt alive again
"Life's only worth living
when we're around each other"

What would happen if I brought a little anarchy to this organized world?
We had made ourselves a beautiful world to burn in
I was the match and he was the gasoline
All we needed was sparks

Cry baby wondered why it felt like
her heart was too big for her body.
Cheshire cat and cry baby went dancing
and she forgot all about it.

But in the end
We were a chemical reaction
and now the bonds that held my atoms together
ARE DISSOLVING

  • Comment from author about the poem: This is a mess, all around. I've been listening to Melanie Martinez's Cry Baby album and that's a big part of inspiration for this poem. Cheshire Cat is my friend whom I've written about too much to deny that I love. I've always been a bit off my rocker, a bit insane, and I've gone through periods of time when I hated who I was, when I hated how I was spontaneous and didn't think things through, when I figured that who I am is the reason why I always seem alone. Then I met him, and he changed how I thought. Those cry baby tears that used to slide down my face began to fade away when he talked to me all the time. The fox and the dog are actually part of a Greek myth which I personally love. The 3rd to last stanza is a play of off some quotes by the Joker: "Introduce a little anarchy, upset the established order and everything becomes chaos" and "When she kissed me, I felt alive again and my whole world became something different. It was heaven and hell, brought together in my head. My own secret world. And I would burn there."

A very personal poem. Thanks for the explanation. I liked the perfect storm stanza.

A very profound poem. Do no apologize for your writing. Apparently it helps unload a heavy heart. Keep writing every day when you can. Journaling is good for our souls as well as praying. ~ Sonia
