The Accused

By: Michael Vanderhoof

I’m not the one you’re looking for; I know nothing of this crime…

There is no evidence against me, I really haven’t got the time.

For I am just the victim here, your laws will set me free,

No crime have I committed, and the truth you’ll have to see.

The death was rather gruesome, and the blood was all around…

My presence near the body, is really all that you have found.

His body lay in pieces, all scattered upon the floor,

A horrific sight indeed, as you all came through the door.

The weapon was a dagger, which was never in my hand,

I keep speaking all these words to you, I hope you understand…

For, I am sticking to these words, as it will never cease.

My freedom will be fast and free, and I will live in peace.

His death was something thought about, in my mind a thousand times…

Secret dreams and fantasies, but never acted out as crimes.

I am only guilty of the deaths within my mind,

Where there are no laws or prisons, or anything of its kind.

  • Comment from author about the poem: In this poem, I actually give it away with the photo...yes! However, the main thing to take away from this poem is the controversial question (are we guilty of sin...etc. for what we really think?) For example, haven't you ever had something bad happen to someone who did you wrong...? Even if it was years later from when they hurt you, doesn't something inside say "You got what was coming to you!" Some people in todays society refer to this as bad Karma. However, this poem is intended for the reader to decide if the girl is guilty or not of the crime... I never say in the poem that she killed the person for whom she is arrested... I leave to the reader to decide if the thoughts she had towards the victim is enough of a crime itself...?

I like the thought involved in the poem. I would say she isn't guilty, for we all have thoughts, but don't carry them out. However, you can never really know...can you? 😉 I believe we live under a justice system that is guilt before innocence, and thus, freedoms and liberties are taken away from those who have done no wrong. I have a poem like this, "Guilty". Check it out, I think you'll like it. 🙂

Great read. I think this really reflects on the societal views displayed through media each day. I like that you left it opened ended as to let the reader decided what to think and not try to decide for them. Like always, great job!

I agree, society has changed so much... I liked leaving this one to the reader to see what they thought the ending should be... I get guilty and innocence both in a classroom setting, and usually great answers from the class on both endings...

I once thought about killing my first wife. I was so upset with myself I asked my buddy, a psychologist about it. He asked me "Have you killed her?" I ansewerwd "no". "Don't worry" he said. "That's normal." I believe that people who are truly honest with themselves would agree with your premise. Great write and commentary.
