And yet, there you were

Sonkoso

My world was one of suffering

When I looked to the light, there was darkness

When I looked to comfort, there was mockery

When I looked to the sun, there was the moon

When I looked to warmth, there was coldness

When I looked to support, there was ridicule

When I looked to mercy, there was cruelty

My world was one of loneliness

I looked into the vast reaches of creation, and instead found destruction

I looked into the heavens high above, and instead found the fires of hell far below

I looked into the bottomless depths of the ocean, and instead found the dry sands of the desert

I looked into the endless stretch of blue skies, and instead found the rumbling of thunder

I looked into the compassionate embrace of love, and instead found the beatings of hate

And yet, there you were

As beautiful as a blooming orchid

As unbending as a mighty oak

As soothing as a midnight lullaby

There you were

When I looked to the light, I saw your figure

When I looked to comfort, I felt your gentle touch

When I looked to the sun, I saw your radiant smile

When I looked to warmth, I felt your embrace

When I looked to support, I heard your hushed assurances

And when I looked to mercy, I heard your soft voice

There you were

If the rest of the world was filled with destruction, you were creation

If the rest of the world was filled with the fires of hell, your laughter was the the musical chiming of the heavens

If the rest of the world was filled with the dry sands of the desert, your eyes were the bottomless depths of the ocean

If the rest of the world was filled with the grey clouds of storm and the vengeful rumbles of thunder, your smile was the endless expanse of blue skies

If the rest of the world was filled with the beatings of hate, your touch was the compassionate embrace of love

There you were

You were my family

You were my friend

You were my lover

You were my guardian

You were my everything

You were my all

And yet, here you are not

So although you aren’t to be with me anymore, I will not anguish

I will not cry

I will not curse

I will not shout

Although you aren’t to be with me anymore, I will smile

I will sing

I will laugh

I will joke

You were my world

Before you, there was nothing

With you, there is the world

After you, there will be the future

So although it will be hard

Although it will be tough

I will strive to be able to live in the world you thought was good

I will strive to be able to live in the world you thought was worth living in

I will strive to live in a world where you thought could exist without you

And yet, there you will be

Goodbye, my dear

Goodbye, my world

Goodbye, my everything

Goodbye, my all

Wait for me, in a world I can’t yet visit

And soon I will join you

For I know, there, you will be
