Wake Me Gently

John Snowdon

Wake Me Gently

Please wake me gently before you leave,

As I can no longer stand to sleep alone.

Besides, it’s these midnight visions that have deceived

By blending savage words with a gentler tones.

Now the rubble of all our efforts lie in vain

In a crumpled pile from the relentless strain,

Recording of every fault line we ever sustained;

As I am no longer yours, and so shall remain.

We are far to brittle and much too frail;

When even our best intentions have all gone stale,

And now hold our hands down separate trails

In a twilight sorrow when the shadows wail.

Who, by our fire’s flames shall thus surmise

That these were dying embers from an ancient time;

Or the last dimming light from a star’s demise.

And this shall tell our tale? This through such simple say?

Reduced to some dwindling haze from a fractured beam

That serves only to mantle what we lost along the way

And then abruptly end this borrowed dream?

This?  Please wake me before you leave.
