Heart-Shaped Gift

NB

What I have given was not just a part

It's pure in its being, silent & true

What I have given some may call Heart

But... Everything was my gift to you

When shadows no longer danced in the room

When dawn broke through walls of painful design

When our worlds were still broken, but together, in bloom

In that single moment as we crossed the line

It all looked so simple, back then...

With the shape of a heart, this small piece of glass

I gave to you, not afraid it'll fall

I only feared that when the springs pass

I'll know you never held it at all

When storms come, disguised as seconds of rain

When feelings & moments we start to define

When songs echo only to entertain

Without a name that's still carved on my shrine

It sounded so mystical, back then...

& I still hear the stones raining down the streets

& the stars, obscured, run back into space

I send whispers away through the thin morning sheets

But they're too loud

& they die in your soft embrace

They seemed much more quiet, back then...

& when I know that I have played my role

When I know I could give more than I've taken

I'll go back to find the child that they stole

Or was it us that made him so lost & forsaken?

We were so much more, back then...
