This or that?

anoldwoman

I wanted one thing and not the other

I got the one I wanted.

Then one turned into the other, I thought.

When I discovered what I had really had,

I was confused, shattered.

I had what I had wanted in the first place and not the other.

But now I think I want the other.

Let me try this again.

I wanted this and not that

I got this and it turned into that, or so I thought.

Although devastated to find it was, after all, this and not that.

I decided to keep this temporarily.

But now I think I would like the other, with another.

  • Comment from author about the poem: How do you know what you really want? I thought I wanted one thing and I got it. I thought it turned into another. But it didn't. I discovered that I didn't want what I thought I want. Now I want the thing I thought it had turned into.
