The Formation of Poetry

Elizabethan Sea

The Formation of Poetry

Loose a writer among shards of word,

Pieces of life, glittering glass,

Pieces of the present and the past,

Pieces of speech long remembered.

Imagine forever occasionally.

Drop the reins and set the mind free.

Listen for the spark that keeps the fire burning,

The reason for the ship's tossing and turning.

Carve out what you mean it to be.

Shape in time to your own harmony,

Separate out the shining stars,

Will you pride yourself on the scars?

Precious pearls and charms alike beaded,

No music nor notes are needed.

Song-like swing with rhythm and rhyme,

On the waves of a tale in time.

Indulge in writer's pleasure,

Gush over the sea, the sunset,

The moon without measure,

Dramatize and imagine,

In a writer's web,

All of the songs we will spin.

Images that flash brilliant as a knife,

Splash vivid paintings of glee,

How do you describe happy?

Give them the breathe of life.

Take some trinkets down from the shelf,

Careful not to cut yourself

On reminescent diamonds of the mind,

Past times never quite left behind.

But if you do,

Smear the words with your tears,

Write about your joys and your fears,

Because afterall,

Poetry is emotion and emotion comes from you.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is just how I imagine the inspiration to write poetry comes to many writers. It can definitely be different depending on the type of writing or poetry you are doing. It's so broad, artistic, and open to the liberty of expression that it's hard to pin down exactly what poetry is, but this is one way I feel about it.
