The Breakable Oath (A Satire on the Drinker)

AuburnScribbler

With heavy head I do arise,

Sounds are far too much,

My heartbeat fast, I feel it’s cries,

Shaky hand on chest does touch,

The skin all over starts to crawl,

Like a poisonous snake,

My bruises show last night’s fall,

After feasting on acidic lake,

A lake from old world and the new,

Some corked and some screw top,

Once so succulent but now the spew,

Commences with no stop,

A wine rack is upon the floor,

Making a gruesome puddle,

Internally I scream, and implore,

For a stop to infernal muddle,

At last this wicked waterfall,

From me has found its halt,

My hunger rumbles, makes it's call,

I need to restore my salt,

Disregarding last night’s swill,

As I chomp on something needed,

Repairing the cells that I nearly killed,

By socially being miss leaded,

An oath in mind I start to think,

As the day becomes much clearer,

“From today I shall not touch drink,

My liver need not be a fearer!”

But this wish is made in vain,

As the cork will pop once more,

For sometimes wine can make me sane,

Though I will moderate to be less sore,

A glass or two will greatly assist me,

So I can write one more canto,

Such pleasant liquid philosophy,

That is found in Sauvignon or Pinot,

My head and heartbeat calmer now,

Thus I continue my growth,

Today hard liquor I will disallow,

But tomorrow I will break this oath.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Most of us have done it, on a night out we have said to ourselves "just a couple" but we bump into friends who are wanting a more flamboyant night. So "a couple" inevitably turns into "a lot more". So this poem is dedicated to those who have made the Breakable Oath "I am never drinking again" whilst suffering a hangover the morning after. Hope you enjoy.
