Jenga

whatisthis

All you ever did was lie
I should have known in the first place
Stealing words from the libraries of others
Using your newfound vocabulary
To quote them on things they never said
And after
Smiling to their faces

You drew me in with your silk stories
Woven with gold and deceit
Elaborate traps
A tall monument
Fabricated only to kill

You "knew how I felt"
You "would always be there"
Trust is easy to break
You knew the trick was to build it first

Build it before you pull out that one fateful Jenga block
The whole structure collapsing
It was built to fall from the start

You knew
You built an Eiffel tower with
Comfort and
Help and
Laughter
With what I thought was loyalty
With false support

I knew
Somewhere deep in my mind
I knew
But I chose to ignore myself
I said,
"no. you wouldn't do that."
And I was right
But only for a while.

The night you pulled out your last Jenga block
I cried

I cried for the friendship that never was
I cried for the friendship that never would be
I cried, screaming anguish into the walls of my room
My pillow damp with your betrayal

When my heart had finished tearing itself out of my chest
I picked it up carefully and brushed it off
Dusting off glass and pulling out splinters
Placing it back in the hollow where it belongs

But not before taking it
Hardened from its scars
And smashing your

little
wooden
game

to smithereens
