Captive.

Fay Slimm.

Captive.

Captive's clipped feathers
lie in wild distress
aside bird internment.

Indifferent steel-bands
win flight-abandon
for one Nightingale catch.

Intense sight seeks far
beyond prison bars
and flies high to first star.

Compulsion to sing
evokes some inbuilt
recall of matings on wing.

Incessant thrashing

at wire walls asks

this fear-time to pass.

Trilling for freedom

cage-bird pleadings

make me steal the key.

Fly ~ ~ my beautiful

oh quickly use

open door to a future

that now is all yours.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Just a short story of kindness at work. Saw the picture and imagined a situation where a gentle maiden saw the distress of a sweet nightingale which led to her stealing to release the captured songbird .

You've done it again, Fay, with this captivating expression of captivity. Thank you for releasing both us and the bird at the end.

Bird or person held captive is cruel. Nicely done.

Wild distress provokes mind to think about this captive bird. Feathers lie in wild distress really. This moment of expression is thrilling for freedom. Cage-bird is pleading to give freedom to fly in sky. Quickly the door of future should be opened. Very sensitive and thought provoking poem this is. Excellently penned poem this is.
