Winter Snow

Tom

Trees stand skeletal stripped of life

Impossible to know if they are done

Or buds may come

Light proves grey ripped of golden promise keep on keep on

Cold persists and finds the bones the hatches battened the fire is lit

But cold consumes no not crisp no snow no snow

Oh snow to cover this beauty in cold

No snow no snow

Will buds come from this rough bark

Nothing shows for endless time

Asleep perhaps asleep I pray on bended knee

On bended knee unused so long

Or will this be

Brittle testament amongst dancing leaves

The oak comes late a colour less fine

Than those that grow for their first time

But it comes sure and strong as it sailed the seas

It has no dance no need to claim

It’s strength is quiet devoid of shame

Oak has seen much come and go

Oak will see much come and go

The fire of noise the rampant noise

Dancing with all in the power of life

Species skitting around each one

Feeling inside only power and speed

God’s earth possessed by passion and need

Consumed with being and knowing life

Being being alive alive

Heat will soak with grateful calm

Thoughts of winter sting the heart

But this time of slowing down work done

Work done in finding this time this time

All colours shown each their own

Look up around and shades are all

Nameless majestic golden hues

That thump the heart and cry I am!

And here I move again

Towards winter cold

But now but now

With winter snow

  • Comment from author about the poem: I am new to poetry. This is a reflection on divorce. I hope it's clunkiness doesn't jar too much. All criticism would be very welcome - I'd like to learn about poetry, so please do call out crashing errors as well as everything else. I'd be grateful for your thoughts positive or negative. Thanks. The poem is replete with figurative language Tom yet for me personally, somewhat removed from the pain of divorce that I experienced in my own life. Assuming you are writing about your own divorce, did the divorce enable you to personally experience a greater degree of freedom when it was all said and done?
