My Maternal Grandparents, "William and Dessie Ozmun".

Edward Charles McDevitt

Grandpa I remember fondly sitting on your lap,

Before you left that evening to your Eternal nap.

Your name for me was "Bullhead", which really wasn't bad,

And even though I was so young, your passing left me sad.

You left behind the one's you loved and, yes, I loved you too,

But it was Grandma Dessie, that you had called out to.

She answered with "I'm coming Bill!", when she awoke that morn,

It was 10 years later to the day, that she left me to mourn.

I love you both so very much, still after all these years,

And 'cause I know you're Home with Him, smiles replace tears!

Your Loving Grandson, Ed

  • Comment from author about the poem: I had just turned 14 when I wrote this poem and was published in the Akron Beacon Journal. I didn't know my Grandfather that well as I was only 3 when he passed but, I remember sitting on his lap and rubbing his arms. He had a heart condition which caused him to bruise and I thought by rubbing them it would somehow help. I'm grateful for that memory! However, my Grandmother "Dessie Mae" knew me quite well. Although mischievous, she always had my back! I wanted to stay with her so, on Sunday, I would lag behind and my Mother would leave without me. My Father would come and get me a few hours later (He liked it because that gave him a reason to stop at the VFW for a few beers before picking me up!) and my Grandmother would say to my Father in a stern voice "Don't you hit him, John!" Yes, it was 10 years to the day that they passed, My Grandfather March 29th, 1956 then, my Grandmother March 29th, 1966. Ironically, my Grandmother's sister, my "Aunt Babe" also passed on the 29th of March in the year 1984. It is also my cousin Sue's birthday. For us, the Ides of March is on the 29th, not the 15th! Oh, how I treasure the memories.. I hope you all enjoy!

Grandparents are such special people. I've been lucky enough to also know all of my greats and even one great great. I hope eventually to memorialize some of them the way you have yours in heart poems.

Your young and talented ability to tell in words the feelings for family shines through in this tender verse - thank you Edward for sharing your memories of grandparents with us. A beautiful read.

Thank you so much Fay! I'm really trying to get out there to show just what I can do. I'm not sure I'm doing it correctly. Am I/
