Society Please

brokenflower

Social media.

Snapchat. Instagram. Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook.

All of these meant to be this generation's way of fun.

Sharing pictures and messages to let our friends know what we're up to.

Scroll down the news feed and find the worlds ideals,

Anything from a picture perfect health guru to an Instgram "baddie".

As we scroll, do we really know what we're getting ourselves in to?

Vewing "perfect" people makes teens and tweens think

"I'll never look as good as that"

or even "Why am I so fat"

Female celebrities like the Kardashians and Kylie Jenner,

Teach young girls you have to get injections and

train your waist to be thinner.

With the fake bodies photoshopped content,

how can a normal person, about themselves, ever feel content?

Society please,

stop with the nonsense which

makes women and girls believe

imperfection isn't acceptable.

Because the idea of perfection,

makes no sense.

Then there's school.

Created as a place to obtain knowledge,

to educate children on how to obtain success.

but is that really all we're taught?

No,

we're taught that girls have to hide their bodies because

god forbid a single shoulder, knee, or collarbone is visible,

A male may become distracted,

by a girl whose body they found attractive.

Since when did the world decide

it was okay,

to set a list of rules called a dress code

which demanded that every girl must not show even the slightest part of her bust

a set of rules which taught girls their bodies were objects that should be hidden.

and unless you want to spend the day locked away,

you must obey.

Society please,

stop teaching girls to hide their bodies,

when you should be teaching boys to not objectify them.

Still don't believe society needs to change?

Maybe this story will get through to your head.

A girl is one of the youngest in her class,

but expectations she is determined to surpass.

She spends her weekends with friends and family,

her only escape from the worlds insanity.

Weekdays spent at school

and practicing her craft,

the brightest in her class.

Others think her life is simple

they couldn't be more oblivious.

The girl used to have so many friends

even though she wasn't "cool".

"Popular" girls teased her for her clothes,

her life,

her weight,

her looks,

even her home.

She began to feel as if she was being crushed by a dome.

She faked her face makeup,

lost weight,

and wore skimpier clothing.

but she still couldn't escape the loathing,

so her old personality disappeared.

in summer she began to go to parties and drink.

hoping that the people who denied her would rethink.

New friends came,

and old ones faded.

Boys began to approach her as if she weren't a person,

but merely an object

they asked for provocative photos and would spread rumors

If she were to object.

and so she obliged.

Boys used her, she got depressed.

She began to cut.

She tried to return to who she used to be but,

came to realized those doors have shut.

The constant scolding she got at home didn't help.

And she was once again trapped under a dome.

She began to wonder

Society please,

how can other girls be popular without being a sleaze?

Rumors spread.

No matter how hard she tried, the lies wouldn't end.

The one person who kept her going was her best friend.

but eventually he too, grew distant.

They text one night,

but the boy decides he would rather sext,

so she send him photos, thinking she can trust him.

but after that night her world became more grim.

he told everybody.

Said that she was nothing but a trashy slut.

she lost her so called best friend,

and now just wants this nightmare to end.

she asks every night,

Society please,

what did I do to get the life that I have?

Most people don't care if I live or if I die,

so why should I even stay alive?

Wondering whose story this is?

I'all give you a hint

stop asking questions in your head,

and ask the girl who stands before you instead.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this poem one night when I was reflecting on my life. I will not reveal my age, but let's just say that I am young. This poem is my out take on my life and what the flaws are in society that has caused this. I was made to believe that if I was a "goody goody" that I wouldn't be popular, but now I've lost the person I loved the most because my desire to be popular and for boys to like me was so strong. Don't follow in my footsteps. You'll just ruin your life before it even begins.

Well written and very true. Social media has compounded the problem, but the problem has existed in this society for quite some time. As a man, I can say that body shaming and the idea of petfection plagues boys and men too...though it is less acknowledged and boys/men are socially taught to react to those things/pressures differently than women are...which then makes for a different effect on both. Regardless, it is devastating and girls get the worst brunt of it because they are treated unequally in just about every aspect of society. I stand in solidarity with you in exclaiming...Society Please! Great write!
