Desert Rain

SheWasTheSun

Child, let that desert rain pour

Let the heavy, humid air fill your calcified lungs

Breathing life into your deadened, hollow core

Let it climb up your ladder, using bones for rungs

And as that dirty desert rain

Rinses you clean of murky thoughts,

Comfortable cobwebs, and the plainest of stains

All at once, you’ll know why you fought

Each splintered hope, Every filthy tear

Each ugly bruise on your tattered heart

In that muddy rain, it will all become clear

That your tragic end is a miraculous start

That your petrified old is a stunning new

That your trivial mean is a healing kind

And yes, this cement cradle has a piece of you

But that piece is one you’re willing to leave behind

They’ll keep it safe, that’s what they do

Caged, padded, taped, and locked

Sealed up in that suffocating sameness glue

So that nothing can burn it, not even that desert hot

And as the dusty wind blows

You’ll watch on from dreamland

And all at once, you’ll remember why you chose

Soil rich in risk over that warm, bone-dry sand
