Mother.

kevin browne

Good old fashioned love of a mother care and dreams
Broke, stoned of brothers, sisters children cry and screams
Grow up, take a trip down the slide in a world of playground toys
Kisses on the cheek somehow her shine never left her boys
Straw fields there where we strolled picking nuts with buzzing bees
Playing conkers shoelace string, her love of us and climbing trees
Danced and we have sung before she tucks us in bed good night
Days when turning night, sweets, whose are they, let's have a fight
Records spinning out old tracks and a memory has a lift each day
My, my fathers' boy who took the hand of mum, there was no way
Football in the garden, bicycle turning wheels had so much fun
Cutting old newspaper clippings from page 3 number 1 in the Sun
Nappies filled with tears and the school days of headmasters cane
Twinkle little star, love you mum so hold us close with love to gain
Tears just for fears when swap shop and crackerjack was on tv
Car trips in the back where sun-drenched beaches looked at me
Crossed bow ribbons tie and bubble gum stuck in sisters twirly hair
Scalextric with a money box, we had for Christmas was so fair
Dressed and starting work was mum who taught us how to cook
Gel back hair fairy tales when she stored us up in a comic book
Big black eye and stormy love with marriage breaking on the cliffs
Rubix cube, paddling pools with Superman causing other rifts
Share alone your wonderful thoughts of smiling faces and lollipops
Crying time to give to mum with some jumping over lead rooftops
Passed a test say well done another teenager who's on the run
Handkerchief soaked eyes when we left you then there's none
Heart-hand, mouth to mouth another sweet little moment mystery
Golden syrup on a plate my mother's nature is always great to see
Your smile has forever been a perfect gracious fit just for you
Her heart, a fire burns with raindrop patterns on top of all you do
Thank the Lord you are ours and don't forget we all love you too.

Kevin, I absolutely LOVE this poem! A great and fitting ode and may I say 'declaration of love and gratefulness' to our mothers! Thank you!

Ah - a worthy and very perceptive tribute Kevin to all those excellent mothers whose smile "has forever been a perfect gracious fit." A truly lovely read.
