Shingebiss and the North Wind

BlueDays

In his wigwam all night long
Shingebiss chants his merry song
Kabibona'kan frosty man
Come and freeze me if you can!

I am warm and I am free
And you are mortal just like me
Kabibona'kan bone shaker
Come on in and meet your maker!

Old man North Wind loudly blows
Screeching wildly as he throws
Shingebiss stands proud and strong
In his wigwam all night long

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is inspired by an Ojibwe (or Chippewa) Native American fairy tale called Shingebiss and the North Wind. I have been listening to these stories before bed and particularly enjoyed this example of strength, self belief and perseverance against the odds. I hope you enjoy 😊

I enjoyed it too. Native American Indian culture is very interesting and you've penned a honorable tribute to that culture. Thank you for sharing BlueDays. ; )

I have been interested in the Native American history and culture since I was a small girl. These tales are great and make for excellent dreams.

Loved this - the rhythm of your poem conjured up the picture of a wigwam, camp fire and native dance taking place.
