For the Love of Night and Day

F.G. Franklin

For the love of Night and Day

Morning loved tomorrow

Waking up with sunshine

But evening loved sorrow

And a full cup of wine

The bright of the morning

Found your hand in mine

But evening was lonely

For things left behind

Evening was lonely

For things left behind

The sun loved a dark girl

And she was so sweet

He chased her around the world

But never did meet

His true love till sunrise

He kissed her at dawn

Then she would be gone as

She left him alone

She would be gone as

She left him alone

Sweeter than chocolate;

And dark as coffee

Was his own true love

And he thought that she

Would gladly surrender

To his loving schemes

But she left him a prisoner

Of darkness and dreams

She left him a prisoner

Of darkness and dreams

Morning came, tomorrow

Woke up with sunshine

But evening found sorrow

In a full cup of wine

The birds would sing wishing

Their best to the dawn

But she gave him two kisses

And then she was gone

She gave him two kisses

And then she was gone

The night is a wandering

Harlot that cheats

Though her sins are scarlet

She still seems so sweet

To the sun as he kisses

Her soft lips at dawn

And each night she misses

His warmth and his song

Each night she misses

His warmth and his song

Don't cry for the morning

With eyes full of rain

But do heed this warning

From sorrow and pain

When you hear birds singing

At the breaking of dawn

His true love is clinging

With tears of her own

His true love is clinging

With tears of her own

Don't seek in the darkness

To err find a wife

Or you will be sorry

 The rest of your life

Treasure your sunshine

At the break of day

When morning is broken

As night slips away

Morning is broken

As she slips away

Remember this story

As long as you live

Offer to glory

What glory may give

But don't seek the darkness

To drink of her wine

Or you will find sorrow

Instead of sunshine

You will find sorrow

Instead of sunshine
