El Bandito

Edthepoet

Try as I might
To lay off the whiskey
And put the powder down
What the hell else do
You give to a lady of the night
Who helps you take down the town

Well the job was done
And I readied her share
When revenge consumed her mind
She caught a well dressed man raising his hand
To a scantily clad
Beauty half his size

 I said lady
Don't you pull the trigger
Put that rifle down
But what else was
She going to do
To the man who knocked her around

He promised her a way
Out of this place
If she did a favour for him
Then as soon as she
Wasn't flavour of the month
He hooked her up on heroin

Well in my eyes
A woman is still a woman
Despite her every sin
And I couldn't bare
The stories she cried
That pimp he had it coming
She pointed that rifle
Between his eyes
And said "it's your turn to beg for mercy"
That wide eyed pimp
Barley moved his lips
Before her itchy trigger finger finished him

Little did I know
The pimp owned
Half of Mexico
The lawyers the judges and the scum

What chance did I stand
In a foreign land
With a whore some whisky and one gun

We made it out
Of Mexico City
Into a tavern
On a country road

The tequila was flowing
The ladies were all knowing
About what really gets a man to go

My new lady friend
Said it's time we get going
When suddenly
she took me by the hand

The mariachi band
stopped mid flow
And everyone with two legs ran and ran

I could see the fear
In her eyes
And feel the devils breath
At my back
To my surprise
It felt cold

I could hear the angles
sing a gospel hymn
To my suprise
One I know

I said to the lady
It's time for you to go
Take the gun and the money
From me, go on now, down the road
Just Remember who set you free

I have been running
Since I was a boy
It's the only life I known
I have been running
Since I was a boy
But I have run out of road.
