THE SMILE

THE SMILE
BY: TINA CATO

When you were just a little boy,
Your eyes were oh do bright...
They sparkled like a shining star.
That lit the darkest night...
You were the cutest child,
I'd seen in all my years...
You had this glow about you,
Even through your tears...
Your smile was a one of a kind,
You'd say "God made this for me"...
Happily you wore it
For everyone to see...
You'd brighten every room,
That you ever walked in to..
There was no rhyme or reason,
It's just something you would do...
You never met a stranger,
You'd talk to anyone...
It didn't matter where or when,
You felt it must be done...
You were such a smart child,
Your quest for knowledge vast...
You wanted to know everything,
"Mommy, why's that train so fast"...
I didn't always have the answer,
To the questions you would ask...
But you made sure to ask again,
So I had to complete the task...
Sometimes I would wonder,
Why is he asking me this...
You were so perceptive,
There wasn't much you'd miss...
One day while at the park,
And for no reason at all...
You headed over to me,
You quit playing ball...
"Mommy, tell me why it is',
"That lady looks so mad"...
"I don't think she is mad" I replied,
"To me she just looks sad"...
You asked "What made her sad, Mommy",
"Baby boy, I didn't know"...
Your little face looked troubled,
And I knew, over there you'd go...
I told you not to bother her,
As you quickly walked away...
Exclaiming as you left,
"I've got something I must say"...
"Hi Ma'am, my name's Jay",
"Would you like to have a chat"...
She replied "That'd be very nice",
So on the ground you sat...
"Ma'am, while I was playing",
'Something caught my eye"...
"You looked so sad and lonely",
"I just wanted to ask you why"
Her voice was soft as a whisper,
As she replied to Jay...
"It's been 3 years",
"Since my husband went away"...
You asked, "Ma'am where'd he go".
"And when's he coming back"...
"He went Home to Heaven",
"When he had his heart attack",
"We married 50 years ago",
"He never made me cry"...
"When he died, my first tears fell",
"And now they will not dry"...
"Ma'am I'm very sorry".
"That you're in so much pain"...
She said "Things can make you sad",
"And all it does is rain"...
You asked her all about him,
Oh, the questions that you had...
But she answered every one,
It seemed to make her glad...
She said "I must be going",
You cried "Please don't leave just yet"...
"I wanted to come talk to you",
"And I'm so glad that we met"...
"I wanted to try and make you smile".
"But I wasn't sure just how"...
She said "You came and sat with me",
"We talked and I thought Oh Wow".
"This young man really wants to know",
"That very plan to see"...
She said "Thank very much",
"What you did means so much to me"...
You said "I'm glad it made you happy",
"I watched for a long while"
"Even as we talked",
"But not once did I see you smile"...
"I know you couldn't see it",
"But I assure you it was there"...
"Inside my heart was smiling",
"Because you you showed you cared"...
"You're a kind and polite young man",
"I'm so glad we got to meet"...
You said "I enjoyed myself today",
"I think that you're very sweet"...
"Good bye Jay it's been a pleasure",
"I must leave its getting late"...
You said "I hope to see you again",
She smiled real big and said "It's a date!"
