Alone In a Starless Night

poetboy123

I look back

Seeing those heads faced down in shame

Unchained, yet freedom they lack

To our aid none of them came

I look back to turned eyes and dry tears

Surrounded though we couldn’t be more alone

Beneath their cruel king, but only subjects to their fear

I do not scream, I do not pray, I do not plead to hearts of stone

I look back to the familiar faces that now seem so far away

As if my very glance pierces their soul asking for what they had to say

Silence meets my gaze with a frosty indifference

The memories of us would fade away until they’ve forgotten our absence

I look back, helplessly searching for a glimmer of light

Their flames have eroded to ashes, settled in this starless night

Our hope has eroded to ashes, despair shining in this bleak night

Terror clawing upon my heart, any saviors seem to evade my sight

I look back to the past, all the times I had lived for

Vanishing before me, stolen by the reaper known as war

My heart screams, my soul prays, my eyes plead to hearts of stone

I want to call out, my lips don’t move, we are alone
