My Puppies
There’s nothing like a litter of pups
To wake a sleeping young boy up
With their licking here and there
and their slobber in your hair
There was a photograph of the time
In an album my mom could find
When we played every day
With our dog and little mates
We understood the pups must go
though it was a sad thing to know
and we couldn’t really prepare
for their going anywhere
We were allowed to keep one pup
And the pick of the litter was really tough
With several pups beyond compare
And a few extraordinaire
The many winners amongst the group
Wagged their tails and were little brutes
and would soon know how to retrieve
and find their place in the family
