Where I Live

PoeticPsycho

Where I live resources are scarce
Like trying to find water in a desert
And more than often ghetto birds are shining lights over houses
Like vultures waiting for their prey to finally collapse
The transformation from boy to man is blurry
Consisting of a 13 second beating
Wiping the tears and blood off your face as you are welcomed into your new brotherhood

Where I live, if you make it to 21 you're blessed
Escaping the many paths that end no where but the edge of a cliff

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is a representation of a couple of the things that happen where I live. Youth programs are not always available and so on free time they are roaming streets getting into trouble. A ghetto bird is another way of saying helicopter. Lastly, it talks about getting "jumped-in" into a gang, because of the fact that many of the youth in minority communities grow up without a father figure, they turn to gangs as their way of making up for it. Hope you enjoy

It must be tough growing up in gang neighbours in LA. When I was a kid I used to sell a little weed and listen to gangsta rap cos I thought I was one (I was just an idiot) I used to watch all the movies. Boys N The Hood, Menace To Society etc. I still like the gangsta films but I sure as shit wouldn't like to grow up there.

    Great poem - Syd

It is tough but it's the way life is. There's beauty and everything and I try to find the beauty in this struggle since I live it and breathe it, and try to shine alittle light on it in hopes that someone will help make a change. Honestly gangsta rap is good music, especially Tupac. He's really my inspiration for writing poetry. The hood movies are also pretty good, if you have not seen American Me by Edwards James olmos then I recommend it to you. It's a good hood movie.
