a brisket dinner and two beers drilled into my chest

“Holland” -Brad Melhdau Trio, 2012

The absurd creeps in sometimes

It’s heard in the monotone squeal of trash videos, with no sound the camera hums

It’s the day the most metal dude you know gets too drunk at 11am, when you can help your fellow man

It’s seen in bizarre shadows of common animals, stretching in grimace across parking lots

It’s the usual suspects, the people you’d exactly expect

to be at an off-main barbecue joint on a night with little meaning

It’s enforcing rules with freshman,

trying to roll for initiative when all I can think about is gambling with

raven haired dice

You flippant fate

It can pervade entire days

Or is it mania

Is it beercans gone to ruffians

I didn’t need those anyway

It’s the moments when you can get high to preaching beatnik, lullaby in Moloch!

It’s the times when Charles Bukowski makes you fall in fake love with anyone, goddamn anyone

It’s the liaisons with nicotine, taking back the thrill of freezing outside alone

Whatever the butterfly

beat its wings at, blows
