Good morning, Reverend.
Good morning, Maryland.
Good morning, conservatory
And goodbye.

Goodbye, scholarship.
She’s burned too many
Treble clefs.
Goodbye to Mozart;
She’s outgrown you too.

Good evening DC.
Good evening bar floor.
The powerful coats
Of powerful men
Hang
At the door.

Good evening, sirs.
Good evening, ladies.
She wails at the piano,
Caresses the keys.

Say goodbye, Myra.
Goodbye to Baltimore.
Hello, Torrey Pine Tree;
Sprouting from
The floor.

  1. Tori

You are the ivory's favourite lover. You make love to every

Key, warbling your poetry. Nothing could kill your strength; not
A gun, not a man.
Not the cutting words of Billboard - a bimbo!
These were the songs of the time, but a little earthquake was already

Taking form inside your body. You killed your inhibition,
Overthrew the chains of silence with your
Roar, made music credited with
Inciting rebellions, a revolution

Ready to spring to life, bashing out violent melodies and
Etching a place in history. Make way for
A girl with hair made of flames and a voice that could exorcise a
Devil.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This is a poem dedicated to an amazing musical artist who has helped me find my footing in life, split into two parts. The first (Myra Ellen) is dedicated to her life prior to her fame which is why it is named for her birth name and the second half is named after the name she took on as she came closer to fame, Tori. The poem is also written in an acrostic form that spells out "Y Kant Tori Read" as avid Amos fans will recognise as her early debut before she really solidified her voice in music. I feel like I will never be finished editing this poem as my respect and love for Amos makes it so difficult to call the poems finished. There's a thousand things I could say about her, but call this a summary of it all. I am only one poet and Tori Amos is a thousand artists living and breathing through one body. (For those unfamiliar with Amos, I have linked one of her songs. Give it a listen, I urge you.)
