You Could Have Been There

Syd

It's now more than two winters ago
Since she has passed
Storms of emotions
Hail and snow
I didn’t think you had the strength to last...

The pain from mistakes
That you have made...
Puncture wounds
Are the source of the blood...

Wear your heart on your sleave
For all to see
Learn to forgive.....

  Well I wish I could

You could have been there
When she needed you...
They way you acted
I never understood...

You could have been her rock
When she leaned on you
Someone solid
Someone good

You could have gripped
When she needed you...

I guess your feet just sank in the bog

You could have been there
Whe she needed you...
Your dipped headlights
Couldn't penetrate the fog

The last three years of her life
Were a loosing fight
Tried to get help
But It never did any good

The last three years of her life
My sister and I
We tried everything...
But red wine was thicker than blood

Heated arguments on a hot summers day
Done your grandkids memories no good

If I could take back the things that I said
Then believe me I certainly would

You could have been there
When she needed you...
They way you acted
I never understood

You could have been her rock
When she leaned on you
Someone solid
Someone good

You could have gripped
When she needed you...

I guess your feet just sank in the bog

You could have been there
Whe she needed you...
Your dipped headlights
Couldn't penetrate the fog

I'm sorry that I lost trust in you
I thought you were trying to make her life hell..

I thought it was revenge
For the call to the police
And the truth she would tell ...

Revenge for involving the authorities and making you spend a night in a cell

I'm so sorry that I lost trust in you...
I was convinced you were trying to make her life hell

I wasn't covinced you were concerned for her
Not untill I saw a tear in your eye
I thought it was all revenge for the things she'd done
Revenge for the days gone by...

You could have been there
When she needed you...
They way you acted
I never understood...

You could have been her rock
When she leaned on you
Someone solid
Someone good

You could have gripped
When she needed you...

I guess your feet just sank in the bog

You could have been there
Whe she needed you...
Your dipped headlights
Couldn't penetrate the fog

Such a strong person
Reduced to such a mess..
She felt that no one understood

Her strong foundations had rotted away
All that was left were splinters of wood

It's now more than two winters ago
Since she had the stroke
And you made the call for ambulance

It's now more than two winters ago
I still love you Dad...
Everyone deserves a second chance
