When I Was Just a Boy

Accidental Poet

When I Was Just a Boy

When I was just a boy

No need to lock our doors

Most criminals feared guilt

Knowing the feeling of remorse

When I was just a boy

People said hello to each other

Related or not

We’re all sisters and brothers

When I was just a boy

Folks worked as a team

Everyone pulled their own weight

Making reality from a dream

When I was just a boy

So common to see a toy gun

Just kids playing cowboys

Harmlessly having fun

When I was just a boy

The newspaper’s story page

Read front to back without alarm

Never read of road rage

When I was just a boy

Presidents were looked up to

Respected and trusted

Unselfish and honest too

When I was just a boy

Love was universal

Moving positively forward

Instead of vengeful reversal

When I was just a boy

The world was a safer place

No reason to fear

A divided Human race

When I was just a boy

I never imagined I might

Be witness to Earth’s last days

Praying I’ll see Heaven’s light

I could add to this with my own recollections which would never happen now - so sad - a fine piece of writing AP

    • Accidental Poet

I'd love to read those recollections Michael. Thanks for reading and your compliment.

A fine write AP. There are things now which make it seem like past days were 'the good old days'.
'I remember when....' Agghh, no please, Orchi, not remembrances of millions of years ago! As boring as showing us your holidays snaps'. heehee.

      • Accidental Poet

orchi, you took the words right out of my mouth.

        • orchidee

Oh do I ever relate! Thank you AC..... I wouldn't want to be a child in today's world for all the tea in China......

            • Accidental Poet

Thanks Lorna. Glad you're able to relate to my poem. And I can relate to your comment.

What a beautiful piece! As a young person reading this, I can only hope the world returns to the way it used to be

Not everything in the past was great, but there was more maturity and class in some of the world leaders as opposed to today's world leaders. Thanks sky

So sad we live in a place of fear now more than ever! This is a really great poem, and yes, I'm sorta young but I remember those days too.

                • Accidental Poet

I agree Christina, Thanks for reading.

                  A great read, AP!
The poem and visual remind me of a wonderful children’s book, THE DANDELION SEED by Joseph Anthony. I used the book to teach the seasons, the seed’s journey after it was wind blown, and appreciating the challenges it had to overcome.

I feel for today’s youth! Too much to bear!

Thanks Laura, yes I fear for today's youth too. My generation had it so easy compared to todays youth.

Such a great write, I can say the same happened to me 'When I was just a boy'.
