Santiago

Xochitl

An Arizona Iced Tea at sunrise
The sun beams in my brown eyes
I walk to the park at a steady pace
Swing on swings and land on my face
Laugh it off and keep on smiling
Because it's Summer

I'm such a dork and such a nerd
Yet my voice feels so heard
Latin jazz and a thousand bright lights
Express what joy I feel despite
The pain I've felt for years
Because it's Summer

Computer games with northern friends
Keep me busy for days on end
Folded letters with anime art
Make me feel like we are not apart
Despite months of distance
Because it's Summer

Vulnerability feels so fine
Because of this cozy heart I can call mine
Ice cream shops ordering the same sundae
Inform me it's going to be a fun day
Even though my palms keep sweating
Because it's Summer

I met the funniest little kid
Who never told them what we did
The thought of having a child one day
A thought that slowly fell to decay
Yet now still persists
Because it was Summer

Two corgis
Two munchkin cats
Ellie and Edgar
This is Joy
This is Summer

And you remind me that I am waiting for summer - hopefully to be as good as this one.
