They and Them

"Carter Wills"

They gave to Them Their heart,
in all of its broken parts.
And being greedy, the Other took,
never giving another look.

They gave to Them Their mind,
let Them see what lay to find.
And being selfish, the Other explored,
always taking so much more.

They gave to Them Their soul,
and all sums of Their whole.
And being heartless, the Other lied,
saying it was all denied.

They gave to Them Their love,
let Them see what They were made of.
And being callous, the Other chose to ignore,
and all They had given Them now lay torn.

You may wonder now,
who would do this, and how?
Why treat one so low?
And pretend they didn't know?

I didn't have a clue
until a time much more new,
when I saw that “They” was she,
and saw that “Them” was me.

This is very, very powerful. The passion and regret shines through.

Yeah, I... made a rather serious mistake with one I love recently. Hence this writing.
