Broken Promises

Cynthia

They promised to be by my side always

They promised they'd love me

They promised they wouldn't leave me

Broken promises surround me

Shattered on the ground like glass

Sharp to the touch

I try to pick them up and piece them back together but I only get cut

Broken promises are all I ever get

No one will keep them

"You shouldn't make promises you can't or won't keep." My mother has always told me

Yet everyone I know and care about do that to me

Including her

When you break a promise

It's like breaking the heart

It's painful

They promised to always be here for me

No matter what

They lied

They tore my heart to shreds

It's unbearably painful

Broken promises

Broken promises fill my head

Lie after lie

So many promises broken I can't count

I would never break a promise

So why would you?..

Broken, shattered promises
