Asking For A Friend

M. Mohon

What would you do

If the love of your life,

But was never really your lover,

Walked back into your life?

When your head starts reeling,

And your heart might explode,

And your mouth can't keep up

With all the questions you feel owed.

When a joke goes the way

Of being seen as true and mean,

And you thought nothing of it.

It's the same jokes they've always been.

Now you sit on the couch,

Clutching tight to the phone.

You planned a sushi night,

But you never hear the tone.

Back to the feeling

When they first left without word,

No final goodbye.

"I'll call you tomorrow" is what you heard.

Then silence and pondering,

Scheme after scheme,

Until your nights are just heartbreak,

Filled with melancholy dreams.

Would you wait patiently by

As the days come to end,

Or would you give them a call?

I'm asking for a friend.
